Registered Phenomena Code: 327

Object Class: Alpha-White

Hazard Types: Transmutation Hazard, Contact Hazard, Aquatic Hazard, Organic Hazard

Containment Protocols: All current samples of RPC-327 are to be held in high pressure water tanks containing sea water and a chemical mixture containing [DATA EXPUNGED] and iodine to recreate the environment the first sample was found in. All research personnel are required to observe level 1 bio-hazard procedures when handling samples of RPC-327. Instances of RPC-327-1 are to be kept under observation in CSD Barrack 14. A report on any biological or psychological changes should be filed with the site admin on a bi-weekly basis. RPC-327-1 instances may be used for deep water experimentation with approval from site admin.

Description: RPC-327 is a strain of deep-sea coral found by an aquatic research team from [DATA EXPUNGED] in [DATA EXPUNGED]. RPC-327 behaves very similar to other strains of deep-sea coral when in its natural environment. When removed from water and exposed to pressures above sea level the outer tissue rapidly dries out, becoming a beige, chalky substance in under a minute. This substance is a chemically neutral powder that can be easily crushed and mixed with water. In this state, RPC-327 is consumable by any organic creature that requires food to live, regardless of their chemical makeup or place of origin. While tasteless, is capable of meeting the nutritional needs of any organism that consumes it.

Test Log. In order to test the possible application of RPC-327 in the creation of field rations, CSD-331 was given a diet solely consisting of the power produced by RPC-327 three times a day for a period of seven days. All biological functions continued as normal, however, by day three CSD-331 reported sever drop in appetite and a numbing feeling across the skin. Observed behavioral changes included an increase in docile behavior, general complacency, and lowered aggression.

By day four CSD-331 exhibited a marked increase in bone density and several instances of RPC-327 sprouting from the skin. Previously stated behavioral changes increased, leading to CSD-331 to remain very calm throughout the transformation process. The following is a transcript of a psyche interview with CSD-331 five days after the change in diet.

Dr. Philips: How do you feel 331?

CSD-331: Fine, I guess. All things considered. A little drowsy if anything.

Dr. Philips: Are you aware of what’s happening to you?

CSD-331: That powered food stuff’s doing this to me isn’t it?

Dr. Philips: You don’t seem very alarmed by that. You are aware that this is likely irreversible?

CSD-331: Aw, I wouldn't expect ya’ll to go through that much trouble for me doc. I’ve made my peace with it. I figured something like this would happen to me sooner or later, so let’s just get on with it.

Dr. Philips: Your cooperation is appreciated 331.

By day six all of CSD-331’s skin had been covered in coral growths resembling RPC-327. Samples indicate that the instances produced by CSD-331 are identical in nutritional value to RPC-327. By day seven the weight of the coral growths forced CSD-331 to walk with a hunched, semi-quadrupedal posture. The coral growths have also over taken CSD-331 eyes, rendering him completely blind.

At the end of the seven-day testing period CSD-331's body no longer required food to maintain normal function and he was subsequently taken off the diet of RPC-XXX powder. After two months of observation no changes have been detected in his physiological make up, leading the research team to conclude that his transformation is permanent. Similar to the original instances of RPC-327, the coral growths of CSD-331 become an eatable powder when chipped off his body.

A physical conducted by Dr. Phillips has determined that CSD-331 is now capable of surviving pressures of up to 1400 fathoms and is highly tolerant of temperature extremes. While alterations to CSD-331’s metabolism and bone density has caused a 21% increase in physical strength, nearly all manual dexterity has been lost as a result of the fingers fusing together inside of large coral growths covering the arms and hands. As a result, CSD-331 has taken to using his arms for support and locomotion. Despite these changes, CSD-331 has remained calm and compliant towards the research team, offering them free samples of his powder. It is yet to be determined if these remarks are part of an impulse to spread RPC-327 or merely CSD-331’s sense of humor.

Addendum 01: A second round of testing was approved by site admin to use the mental effects of RPC-327 to control CSD populations. 10 grams of RPC-327 powder was added to the food of a testing group of six CSDs. Six CSDs where used as a control group at the same site. While the research team noted a 9% decrease in confrontational behavior over the next twelve weeks, CSDs in the testing group developed coral growths similar to CSD-331. These mutations are similarly irreversible. Site admin has discontinued further testing involving the consumption of RPC-327 powder.
