Containment Protocols: RPC-XXX is to be held within a heavy humanoid containment unit that has been modified to utilize a mechanical vault door instead of a standard electromagnetic lock. This unit is to be lit by metal-halide lamps, which are to provide no less than 3000 lumens of light at all times. In addition, an identical secondary containment unit is to be constructed, linked to the primary containment unit via a passage measuring 2.5m in length and 2m in width, also utilizing metal-halide lamps to provide 3000 lumens of light when in use. This secondary containment unit is to be used when the primary containment requires repairs or maintenance. In this event, RPC-XXX is to be escorted to the secondary containment unit by on-site ASF personnel, armed with…
No electronic surveillance devices are to be installed in the containment unit. Instead, ASF personnel are to confirm RPC-XXX's presence within the containment unit every six hours. Furthermore, no electronic device capable of internet access is to be brought within 15m of RPC-XXX.
The hallway linking the containment units is to be intersected by a secondary hallway leading from the main site into the RPC-XXX containment unit. This hallways measures 10m in length and is also fitted with a mechanical vault door. This hallway is to be fitted with two independent lighting systems, one utilizing metal-halide lamps that provide 3000 lumens of light when in use, and one utilizing metal-halide lamps that provide 6000 lumens of light when in use. In the event of a containment breach during the process of either inspection of transferring RPC-XXX to secondary containment unit, both lighting systems are to be activated if possible, and ASF personnel are to move in and attempt to subdue RPC-XXX.
In the event that RPC-XXX is found to not be present during regular inspection, Site-002 is to go into lockdown and MST Yankee-17 ("Anti-Magic") is to be scrambled to subdue and re-contain RPC-XXX.
RESEARCH/EXPERIMENTATION BAN: 04/10/2022 - Present
Authority: Site Director Alan Sullivan, Anomaly Containment Overseer Dr. Wright McCaig, RPC-XXX Head Researcher Dr. Raunak Kaur Bagrah
Reasoning: RPC-XXX has been deemed a severe containment breach risk.
Description: RPC-XXX is a humanoid robotic construct measuring 1.6 m in height with a mass of 76 kg. RPC-XXX's exterior is covered by a layer of black graphene, measuring 0.8cm thick. Internally, RPC-XXX's endoskeleton is constructed from steel, with this endoskeleton covered by an unknown, rubber-like compound of silicon that connects to the exterior graphene layer. RPC-XXX's body was designed in such a way that its shape appears to resemble standard 21st century combat fatigues, including a helmet and bulletproof vest. RPC-XXX lacks facial features except for two eye-analogues. These eye-analogues are completely white, and are capable of producing light with a brightness of 5000 lumens. RPC-XXX is also able to produce a red colored light from its entire body, measuring ~450 lumens, allowing its outline to be visible in complete darkness. Additionally, the logo of the Righteous Central Protection Agency has been printed on RPC-XXX's left chest and back. These logos have been heavily scratched off in an unsuccessful attempt to remove them entirely.
RPC-XXX is able to detect thaumaturgic energy within 500m of itself. RPC-XXX has demonstrated reduced activity when exposed to light sources greater than 2000 lumens and a relative ultraviolet measurement higher than 400 (µW/lumen); experimentation has suggested that this might be a result of its thaumaturgic energy detection equipment responding to ultraviolet light and causing RPC-XXX to run slower as it attempts to process this.
RPC-XXX is capable of spontaneously producing an anomalous firearm, designated RPC-XXX-1. RPC-XXX-1 resembles a modified version of an M16 assault rifle. RPC-XXX-1 is capable of both firing standard bullets and of firing rounds of superheated plasma. RPC-XXX-1 apparently generates the latter of these over time, requiring at least three days after firing a full magazine's worth1 before they can be used again.
RPC-XXX is also able to directly transfer itself via digital electronic devices that have downloaded an anomalous malware file, designated RPC-XXX-2.
History: RPC-XXX was discovered during an assault by the Array on a compound located in Northern Mexico, inhabited by members of the Church of the Blood of the Lamb2

Containment Protocols: Authority webcrawler Epsilon-19 ("Little Grey Cell") is tasked with identifying and recording potential instances of RPC-XXX. Any examples flagged by Epsilon-19 are to be examined by RPC-XXX research personnel in order to positively identify it as an RPC-XXX instance. Research into preventing RPC-XXX, predicting its appearances prior to its occurrence, or identifying a potential source for it are ongoing.
Description: RPC-XXX designates a series of 74 murders committed world wide since 1957. All instances of RPC-XXX took place in almost identical circumstances, and involved persons with extremely similar personalities and histories. Researchers for the Department of Analytics have determined that the likelihood of RPC-XXX occurring without anomalous interference4 is small enough to warrant Authority attention.
All instances of RPC-XXX have involved two persons, (Victim 1 and Victim 2) being found dead of stab wounds, and a third person (Accused) being tried and given the maximum sentence for the crime.5 The Accused is found guilty based on:
- The murder weapon found at the scene of Victim 2's death, which is identified as belonging to the Accused
- The Accused having found out that the Victims were involved in a sexual relationship, despite Victim 1 having been involved with the Accused for two years before hand.
- Being seen by several witnesses arguing with Victim 1 in a public place one week before the murder.
- Physically assaulting Victim 2 three days prior to the murder.
- Being seen by at least three witnesses near the scenes of both murders at the approximate time of death.
- Lacking a verifiable alibi
- Wounds consistent with evidence at the site of Victim 2's death, including a black eye at a missing tooth.
- Having a history of criminal behavior.
The two victims of RPC-XXX and the accused have always had histories and personalities which match in both generalities and details. The witnesses involved in the case are more varied, but will often witness the events leading up to RPC-XXX under similar circumstances.6 Provided are a list of major qualities. This list is by no means comprehensive. For a full list, consult Document 3XXX-2.
- Victim 1 is a twenty-seven year old female who was engaged in a romantic relationship with the Accused for two years prior to RPC-XXX. She was raised by her mother, had no siblings, and is described by friends as a being non-confrontational and weak-willed. Prior to RPC-XXX, Victim 1 begins a relationship with Victim 2, and attempts to end her relationship with the Accused. Victim 1 is found dead in her car at 2130, having been dead for 15 minutes at that point. Victim 1 is found with three stab wounds in her chest. The angle of these wound indicates the killer was standing up while she was sitting down, presumably meaning the killer was outside the car.
- Victim 2 is a twenty-seven year old male who was involved in criminal activity with the Accused. The exact nature of the type of crime varies by time period. Victim 2 was raised by both parents, has one older sibling, and is described as a generally friendly and good person. Victim 2 begins a relationship with Victim 1 two months before RPC-XXX. Victim 2 is found dead in his bathroom, having died of exsanguination as a result of a cut throat. Victim 2 is apparently able to struggle with his attacker, and his knuckles are cut, suggesting he cut them while hitting his attacker's teeth. A knife or knife-like weapon7 known to have belonged to the Accused is found next to him.
- The Accused is a twenty-nine year old male involved in criminal activity with Victim 2 and in a relationship with Victim 1. The Accused has a history of violent behavior, including an assault and battery charge. Several friends of Victim 1 believe he might have been physically or emotionally abusive of her, though no evidence of this has been found. The Accused discovers the Victim's relationship one week prior to RPC-XXX occurring, argues with and threatens Victim 1 in a public place, threatens and assaults Victim 2, and is unable to provide a verifiable alibi for either his whereabouts at the time of the murder or injuries he sustained at that time. The Accused is also known to have owned the weapon found next to Victim 2.
Currently, no connections between any participants in RPC-XXX are known. No civilian crime investigation organizations have discovered RPC-XXX. No reliable method of detecting RPC-XXX before the murders has been discovered. Personnel with theories on the source of RPC-XXX can submit them to Head Researcher Dr. Kourang Turabi.

Overview: The Hyperion Club is the modern day descendant of an organization of the same name founded in Victorian London as a gentleman's club. Its membership included many minor members of the aristocracy, many of whom were brought together by a shared interest in the occult and supernatural and by the influence of the club's founder, Gabriel Jackson. At an unknown point in the late 19th century, members began to develop a business of buying and selling anomalous items to other parties in Europe and the United States, with many of these sales providing funding for various esoteric rituals and experiments. In the modern day, the Club has evolved into a major business in the Veiled World, providing wealthy contacts with curiosities, artifacts, and at times, resources for their clients' own endeavors. The higher-ups of the Club are known to still include several members of the original founders, with the head of the company believed to be Gabriel Jackson himself. Though viewed by some as simply a business, it is suspected that Jackson and other members of his inner circle are still using the financial resources the club provides them as a method of funding the continuation of projects begun in the early days of their organization.

Containment Protocols: Due to RPC-XXX's status as a high-profile celebrity, containment is currently deemed impossible. Monitoring of RPC-XXX in conjunction with Monarch Security is ongoing. Observation is to focus on ensuring that no person discovers RPC-XXX's nature and potentially determining any capabilities or anomalous properties RPC-XXX possesses that might hinder future containment efforts. Containment Division personnel are currently tasked with devising strategies for potential containment based on this information. Any person that does become aware of RPC-XXX's nature is to be apprehended and administered appropriate amnestics.
RPC-XXX's projected lifespan is unknown; if it is determined that RPC-XXX intends to remain active for a period longer than a mundane human's lifespan, arrangements are to be made for it to be taken into custody and for false information to be distributed to the media about its death.8 An artificial corpse identical to RPC-XXX's appearance at time of containment is also to be made, in order to allow for the high-profile funeral RPC-XXX will be most likely be given. Each year, an artificial corpse similar to RPC-XXX's current appearance is to be produced, to be used in the event that RPC-XXX does "die."9 RPC-XXX's actual corpse, if one is left behind, is to be retrieved and taken to Site-007 for study.
As of January 2024, containment measures will be deemed necessary if it appears that RPC-XXX intends to remain active beyond January 203810 and planned operations to apprehend it are to begin no later than October 2037.

As the plane taxied to the end of the runway at Heathrow, Warner found himself wondering — not for the first time — about why his enigmatic employer had summoned him. He had been called back from Shanghai in a rush, having to leave a potentially lucrative deal with a major figure in the Chinese business world unfinished. The spectre of the People's Committee had been making such deals a rare occurrence since Hong Kong had been transferred out of British hands, so he knew whatever Mr. Grimshaw wanted from him was likely a higher priority than a potential new customer in that market.

Object Class: Beta-White
Hazard Types: Organic Hazard, Sapient Hazard
Containment Protocols: RPC-XXX is currently contained in a standard humanoid containment cell in the Sapient Anomalies Wing of Site-279. RPC-XXX should receive medical checkups at least once a month. One Level-1 personnel should be on call at all times in order to aid RPC-XXX in the motion of RPC-XXX-1, particularly before going to sleep. During sleep, RPC-XXX should be restrained to its bed in order to prevent damage to RPC-XXX-1 as a result of normal nocturnal movements.
All instances of RPC-XXX-1 should be kept in sterile, airtight plastic bags to reduce the risk of infection. These bags should be replaced once a week, and the used bags disposed of via standard methods for disposing of medical waste. Should it become necessary to move RPC-XXX, personnel are to move all instances as close as possible to RPC-XXX in order to reduce the risk of accidental damage. RPC-XXX-1C is to be kept in a climate controlled locker in Site-279's medical wing. The remains of RPC-XXX-1L are kept in cold storage.
Description: RPC-XXX is a male Caucasian teenager. RPC-XXX is 160 cm tall and weighs 47 kg. RPC-XXX is physically normal, but lacks over a dozen internal organs, including the heart, both kidneys, the stomach, and the brain.
RPC-XXX-1 are RPC-XXX’s organs, which for reasons currently unknown have become separated from RPC-XXX’s body. All instances of RPC-XXX-1 hover around RPC-XXX. All instances of RPC-XXX-1 , with the exception of instance -C, cannot be moved more than 3 meters away from RPC-XXX, and attempts to do so will result in RPC-XXX being involuntarily moved towards the moved instance. RPC-XXX-1 instances are also unable to be moved within 20 cm of RPC-XXX. All instances, with the exception of instance -C move along a preset line which they cannot deviate from; for example, RPC-XXX-1A, the heart, moves in a line perpendicular to its original position within RPC-XXX’s chest.
Blood and bodily fluids are still capable of traveling through RPC-XXX's body, with matter apparently being instantly transported from each instance to the corresponding point in RPC-XXX’s body where it would go if it were within the body. For example, blood enters and exits the heart through the normal veins, despite the lack of connection.
Maybe heart and lungs move back and forth because if their movements? Or is this too complicated
Recovery: RPC-XXX was recovered in Jacksonville, Florida, by LMTF 352-Zayin (“Bait and Tackle”) following its hospitalization due to internal bleeding. RPC-XXX claimed to have woken up in extreme pain. RPC-XXX was unable to provide any explanation for the sudden development of its anomalous properties, stating only that it had been suffering stomach pains for a few days. A cover story that these pains were the result of undiagnosed appendicitis, and that RPC-XXX had died as a result of a burst appendix, was provided to the hospital after administration of amnestics to witnesses.

Overview: The Patchwork Brigade is the self-given umbrella designation for a loosely affiliated network of groups and individuals brought together by a shared practice of extreme body modification through anomalous means. The exact nature and motivation for these practices vary, ranging from computer hackers introducing biotechnological components to aid in their activities to small cults believing that improvement of the human body allows worshipers to experience the divine to thaumaturgists that make use of rituals that rely on symbols tattooed on the skin of practitioners. The decentralized nature of the group has made ascertaining its exact motives and outlook towards the Authority difficult; members have been known to offer clandestine aid to Authority agents investigating GoIs such as Kabushiki Kawaii whilst others have engaged in acts of sabotage or terrorism against Authority sites and personnel.

Thanks to for their help.
The strangers came to Red Creek early Wednesday morning, driving a Fairlane they'd rented in Juneau before heading north, and had booked a room at the local boardinghouse. The boy hadn't been as interested as the rest of the townsfolk commented to themselves on the oddity of two white men showing up in Red Creek as the hunting season was winding down. He was more concerned with the sort of problems that all teenagers think are world-ending when they're young. Had he realized what their coming to Red Creek meant, he might have paid more attention.
It started while his sister had dragged him out with her eight-year-old's enthusiasm, after their dog had wandered out of town. They had gone into the woods, and she had seen it first, when they came to the river.
"Look!" she said. "Otters!"
There was a small group of them in the river on the other side, enjoying what little time they had before autumn gave way to winter.
His sister turned to him. "Do otters hibernate like bears?"
"I don't know. Maybe."
"I like otters. I wouldn't mind seeing them in the winter."
He shrugged. Otters were not something he cared about.
"That one seems pretty big, doesn't it?"
He followed his sister's finger to the water, and saw the head of one of the otters, half out of the water, and realized she was right; it looked almost like this one was at least three times the size of the others, maybe bigger.
The big one was staring at them. As they looked, it began to make its way over, swimming against the current.
The quiet of the mid-September afternoon was pierced by the sudden, sharp barking, as Holly, their big Husky, came bounding out from the treeline and ran to the edge of the river. His sister stood up, and Holly ran in front of her, between her and the water. The husky stood, legs splayed and teeth showing, growling at the river.
He turned back to see what had spooked Holly. The otters were gone, and the river was still.
There was a sound of someone moving through the brush, and a man dressed in hunting gear came out of the treeline.
"What the hell are you two kids doing out here?"
"We were looking for our dog," said his sister.
The man pointed at Holly. "That it?"
"Yes."
"Then you've found it. Get lost."
Another man came out of the bushes and surveyed the scene.
His sister was as stubborn as children tend to be. "Why should we? We live here, you're just some hunters. We should be telling you to leave."
"Listen you little brat, just get out of here."
The other man went up to his friend and put his hand on his shoulders. "Harrison, they're just kids." He turned and smiled at the two. "Look, my friend's just got a short temperature. We're doing some hunting, we don't want anyone wandering around where they might get hurt. You kids live in Red Creek?"
His sister just stared them down and crossed her arms.
The nicer man laughed nervously, and turned to the boy. “Son, it’s probably going to be getting dark soon. Why don’t you take your sister here and head back to town?”
The boy looked at the sky, and realized that the hunter was right. If they didn’t head back, it would get dark before they reached home.
As they walked back out of the woods, his sister was not happy. “Why’d you let them push us around?”
“It doesn’t matter. The other one was right, if they’re going to be shooting at things we don’t want to be around.”
“I wanted to see if the otters would come back.”
“We’ll go back tomorrow.”
Holly stopped and turned around, barking again. The boy looked back, and saw an otter scamper off, deeper into the woods.
“Looks like the otters wanted to see you too.”
“I’ve never seen one this far from the river.”
When they reached Red Creek, the man turned back, and saw the otter had still been following them from a distance. As it saw him looking, it turned around, and ran off.
The next day after school he’d gone to the small diner his father ran, and went to his normal spot behind the counter to start taking orders. There were a few truckers, coming south from Anchorage and heading into Canada, and after the sunset, the two hunters came in for dinner. The one that was called Harrison looked like his mood hadn’t improved, but the other had smiled, and apologized.
“You’ll have to excuse my friend I’m afraid, we haven’t had much luck with our hunting, and he’s a little annoyed.” He put out his hand to shake, and introduced himself. “Gregory Rosewater.”
The boy shook his hand, and kept talking. “Hope you find something soon. October comes, hunting season’ll be over.”
“Too bad, this will probably be the last time we’re able to make it out, that law the governor signed back in the summer will be making it a bit harder for us sportsmen to get licenses.”
“Strange, then, that you chose to wait until the end of the season to come to Red Creek,” said a new voice.
They both turned. The speaker was an older man, dressed in a sheepskin jacket, jeans and a worn furred hat that came down over his ears. He was obviously Tlingit like most of Red Creek’s residents, so the boy was surprised to realize he didn’t recognize him. He smiled, knowingly.
“Surely an experienced hunter like you would want to come out at the beginning of the season if you thought you’d not be able to come at all next year.”
Rosewater shrugged. “Well, you know how it is, hard to get away from the office.”
The old man nodded. “Of course, of course.”
Rosewater paid for his meal, and went over to his friend, eyeing the old man as he went.
The man sat down at the counter and put his hat beside him. He reached into his pocket, pulled out a small orange book, and flipped through it quickly as if he had never seen it before.
“My boy, is there any coffee left over?” he said after a moment.
They always kept some for truckers who came in on late night drives, so he poured the old man a cup and watched as he stirred cream in.
As the old man drank, he glanced at the boy. “I hope I haven’t driven off a customer for you, but I never did like obvious liars.”
The boy didn’t know what to say to that, but as he looked at the old man, he realized there was something strangely familiar about him, but he couldn’t say what it was.
The man continued as laid out some change for the coffee on the counter.
“Here son, put out your hands.”
The boy did it, almost without thinking, and the old man dropped something into them with a clink. It was a Russian cross on a chain, about the size of his hand. It shone in the light from the diner’s ceiling.
“That’s pure copper, so treat it carefully. Wouldn’t want to bend it.”
“Why are you giving it to me?”
“Well, you never know when a thing like that might come in handy.”
The man tugged on his hat, and with one last knowing smile, took his leave. The boy went back to work. He still had the rest of his shift to go.
Later that night, his sister woke up screaming. He ran to her room at the back of his house, finding his father already there, looking out the window while his sister pointed.
“There was a man looking in my window!”
His father turned back towards them. “If there was anyone there, he’s gone now. You probably just had a nightmare.”
“I wasn’t asleep! I saw him, he had fat cheeks and dark eyes, and whiskers!”
His father rubbed the bridge of his nose. “See, that’s not a real person. Just go to sleep. And for god’s sake, bother your brother if you have another bad dream, I’m opening the diner at six tomorrow.”
She turned up to him. “You believe me, right?”
“I believe you saw something, but Dad’s right, it was probably just a nightmare.”
His sister scowled as they left, but there were no more bad dreams that night.
The next morning, there was an otter waiting for them across the road as they left the house and headed to school.
He was leaving the diner when the old man came back that evening. “I heard you folks had some trouble last night.”
“My sister just had a nightmare, it wasn’t a problem,” the boy said, and then stopped. Why was he telling the stranger about this, and now that he thought of it, how did he know?
In a way that almost seemed natural, the stranger and he started to walk home together, the older man leaning on a walking stick.
“So son, how has life here in Red Creek treated you?”
What was there to say to a question like that? It was barely a town, where the most exciting thing to happen was the occasional truck coming down, taking the route from Anchorage to Juneau. There was nothing for him there, nothing but a future like his father, who had seemed to lose his drive after his mother’s death, running the diner and living out his days waiting for nothing.
The stranger seemed to understand what his silence meant.
“My boy, someday you’ll learn that a boring life can be a luxury. Enjoy it while you have it.”
They were coming up to the house, and he heard Holly barking. As they came closer, he saw what she was barking at: his father lay on the front stoop of the house, a red mark dripping blood from his forehead.
“Dad!” he shouted, and ran to him, turning him over. He was breathing, but unconscious.
The stranger walked up behind him and said “Move aside, let me have a look. Go look for your sister.”
The boy stood aside, and as he looked around, he realized the door was wide open. Before he could go into the house, he heard Holly begin barking again.
As he ran to Holly, he saw a black, hulking figure walking into the woods, carrying a small bundle in its arms.
“Boy!”
The old man’s voice pulled him out of his shock, and he turned back to him. The stranger looked at him with serious eyes.
“Go get your father’s gun, boy, you’ll need it.” He went into the house and came back out with the hunting rifle his dad kept beneath his bed.
“Do you still have the cross I gave you?”
He nodded, it was still in the jacket pocket where he’d left it yesterday.
“Good, now listen carefully—those men will be here soon, they’re nearby and they likely heard the dog and you shouting. You’ll need to take your father’s rifle, and chase after that thing. It has your sister.”
He nodded again, not even having time to think of how bizarre it had all become as he still processed his father’s injuries. “What was it?”
“A kushtaka.”
He heard the man named Harrison calling from down the street, and the stranger pointed after the creature. “Go boy, I’ll distract them and then come and help. Go!”
He turned and ran into the woods without another word.
As he ran, he thought of the stories his grandfather had told him, about the kushtakas, the otter men that took on human form and tricked sailors to their deaths. He thought about what one would want with his sister. Later, he would think of how readily he had accepted that a creature from horror stories had harmed his family, but in the moment the shock kept him from thinking too deeply on what the old man had said.
Unconsciously, he found himself running abc to the river, where he and his sister had seen the giant otter. When he reached the bank, he saw it: his sister lay, as if asleep, floating on the top of the water at the edge of the river, and the kushtaka itself, six feet tall, with sleek black fur and an otter’s face placed atop a muscled human-like body. It heard him come out of the trees and looked up at him, before speaking in Tlingit.
“Go child, there is nothing for you here.”
He had to stop, to catch his breath, and think of the words he needed to answer with.
“She’s my sister, let her go.”
The kushtaka shook its head. ”Child, you do not know what you ask of me.”
“What do you want with her?”
The kushtaka looked at him, and in its alien face, he saw sadness. “I am the last of my kind, that I know of. Do you know why that is? Your people, both of them drove us out. That is why I took her.”
“Revenge?”
“No. I will make more of my people. You have heard stories of what we can do?//”
“You drowned sailors.”
“Some, yes, I will not deny that. But more than that. Some of us saved them, by making them like us. That is what I am doing to her. She will be a kushtaka, and my people will return.”
“She’s just one girl.”
“There will be others. Children, like her. I can take them, teach them our ways, and in a few generations…”
The boy interrupted. “No. I’m sorry what happened to your people, but you can’t take her. She’s human, that’s what she’s meant to be.”
“And do you think you can stop me?” The kushtaka came out of the water, and as it came closer, the boy brandished the gun. But the creature moved with a speed he could not have predicted from its size, and as he pulled the trigger, it pushed the gun up roughly, and it fired uselessly into the air.
The creature lifted him by his neck, and threw him back, knocking the wind out of him as he fell to the ground. It came forward quickly, and wrapped its hands around his throat.
“I am sorry that I have to do this. But I will not be stopped.”
The boy tried to push the kushtaka off, but it was too strong. He felt blackness on the edge of his vision, and his hands went to his side, grasping for something, anything that he could use against it.
His hand grabbed something cool to the touch, with a chain on it. He swung his arm up blindly, and connected.
The kushtaka screamed.
As the boy caught his breath, he looked at his hand, and found the old man’s cross, which had fallen from his pocket. Then kushtaka clutched at its neck, which smoked like it had touched a burning torch. It snarled dangerously, and lunged at the boy.
He put the end of the cross between his fingers, and stabbed it in the throat.
As the creature lay bleeding, the old man and the two hunters came up from the trees. The kushtaka saw them coming, and it dragged itself forward, dropping itself into the river and disappearing beneath the water. The boy moved to pull his sister out. She was still asleep.
“Boy here, let me look at her.”
The old man placed his hand on her forehead, and pulled a small jar out his pocket, rubbing her with some ointment he pulled from it. He muttered words the boy didn’t recognize under his breath as he did so. After he was done, he looked up and smiled.
“We got here just in time. She’ll be fine.”
Harrison crossed his arms, and scowled. “Alright then. Now that that’s done, there’s a few questions we’re going to need to ask you both, and then we’re going to have to give you something.”
The old man turned to the two hunters, and fished in his pockets for something. “Actually gentlemen, that won’t be necessary—ah, here it is.”
He handed them a card about the size of a driver’s license. Harrison’s eyes opened wide as he read it, and he looked at the old man in shock as he handed it to Rosewater. “This can’t be legitimate.”
“It is. Your superiors have already been informed, there’ll be a message waiting for you when you return to your lodgings. The creature you were looking for is already dying, and you’ll be better off leaving this boy alone.”
Rosewater handed him back the card. “You understand that if you’re lying, it won’t be hard to find you.”
“Actually, I won’t be staying around much longer, but I can assure you, I am speaking the truth. Now if you’ll excuse me, these two have had a rather eventful day, I think they’ve earned a little rest.”
With that, the boy picked up his sister, and they made their way back.
As they walked back, the boy didn’t know what to say. The old man started the conversation.
“I hope you realize that while what you did may have been necessary, it was nothing to be proud of, son.”
“I wasn’t. I mean, I didn’t want the kushtaka to hurt her, but I mean, killing it…”
“Killing is never something a man should boast about, even when driven to it. And in this case, it is wise to remember that anything disappearing from the world forever is a tragedy, even if its last member may have been a misguided and selfish creature. The world is a little less for the absence of the kushtakas. Remember that.”
The boy nodded. That made sense. “Was it really the last of its kind?”
“Perhaps there are some still living out in the oceans in the forms of sea otters. Who can say? Perhaps one day, there will be more of them, and they’ll come back. But it doesn’t do well to dwell too much on what might be, rather than what is or what was.”
They walked on a little while longer in silence. Finally, the boy spoke again, “Who are you anyway?”
The man gave another knowing smile, “A question for another day I’m afraid. We’re home.”
The boy’s father was sitting on the stoop, looking a bit dazed as he held a steak to his forehead. “Hell be alright, the blow wasn’t as strong as it might have been. Tell him to take it easy for a few days.”
The boy asked, “You said you wouldn’t be here in Red Creek much longer, but you said you’d tell me who you were another day. Are you coming back?”
The old man shook his head. “Not here I’m afraid, but we will see each other again. Make no mistake. For now though, worry about your sister and father. Focus on the present and the past rather than the future. The past is something that is as mysterious as the future, but understanding it is even more important. It may not seem like it, but that’s the most important thing I’ve told you.”
The boy nodded, and with one last knowing smile, the old man turned and walked off down the road. As the boy went back inside, he turned and looked, but the old man was already gone.

RPC-XXX-1 are RPC-XXX's organs, which for reasons currently unknown have become separated from RPC-XXX's body. All instances, with the exception of instance -C move along a preset line which they cannot deviate from; for example, RPC-XXX-1A, the heart, moves in a line perpendicular to its original position within RPC-XXX's chest.
Blood and bodily fluids are still capable of traveling through RPC-XXX's body, with matter apparently being instantly transported from each instance to the corresponding point in RPC-XXX's body where it would go if it were within the body. For example, blood enters and exits the heart through the normal veins, despite the lack of connection.
Maybe heart and lungs move back and forth because if their movements? Or is this too complicated
Recovery: RPC-XXX was recovered in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, following its hospitalization due to internal bleeding.
Addendum: Full list of RPC-XXX-1 instances
| Instance | Organ | Notes |
| -1A | Heart | Moves in a line perpendicular to original position. |
| -1B | Stomach | Moves in a line parallel to normal position. |
| -1C | Brain | Unlike other instances, -1C is capable of traveling more than 3m away from RPC-XXX with no apparent negative effects. -1C also does not move in a line, but rather rises in a manner similar to a helium balloon. |
| -1D | Left Lung | Moves in a line parallel to original position. |
| -1E | Right Lung | Moves in a line perpendicular to original position |
| -1F | Large Intestine | Moves in a line parallel to original position. While handling this instance, care should be taken to prevent tangling to avoid blockage. |
| -1G | Small intestine | Orbits RPC-XXX at a 30° angle from the original position. Care should be taken to avoid bunching up. |
| -1H | Pancreas | Moves at 45° angle to original position. |
| -1I | Liver | Moves at 37° angle to original position. |
| -1J | Left Testicle | Moves perpendicular to and behind original position. |
| -1K | Left Kidney | Moves at 50° angle to original position |
| -1L | Right Kidney | Destroyed in Incident-XXX-Alpha. Following separation, RPC-XXX-1L apparently manifested halfway through the floorboards in RPC-XXX's former bedroom. This resulted in it being torn apart, after which it apparently lost its anomalous properties. |

Containment Protocols: Authority Watchdog programs are to monitor psychiatric institutions worldwide in order to identify RPC-XXX-A instances. Any such instances are to be brought into custody and contained in standard humanoid containment cells until RPC-XXX completes. Efforts to develop a cure for RPC-XXX are ongoing. If reports of an RPC-XXX-A instance reaching Stage 5 are discovered, any witnesses are to be amnesticized and the disappearance of RPC-XXX-A is to be covered up using standard disinformation methods.
Description: RPC-XXX is a recurring pattern of hallucinations and dreams experienced by certain individuals, designated RPC-XXX-A. RPC-XXX-A instances describe RPC-XXX as visions or dreams of walking through a forest during a snowstorm, accompanied by alternating feelings of calmness and euphoria. RPC-XXX-A instances advance through 4 stages:
- Stage 1: RPC-XXX-A individuals begin to experience RPC-XXX as a recurring dream, occurring between two and five times a month and gradually increasing in frequency. Once the dreams occur twice a week, Stage 2 begins.
- Stage 2: RPC-XXX-A begins to experience RPC-XXX during waking hours, with outside witnesses describing RPC-XXX-A apparently daydreaming and becoming distracted. The length of this stage varies greatly.
- Stage 3: RPC-XXX-A develops the ability to induce RPC-XXX at will. RPC-XXX-A instances begin to neglect their personal lives in favor of RPC-XXX.
- Stage 4: RPC-XXX-A instances enter a semi-catatonic state, often sequestering themselves in their homes and refusing to exit, spending most or even all of their time in extended RPC-XXX hallucinations.
- Stage 5: Currently, it is believed that RPC-XXX-A instances reach a final stage of their experiences. The exact details of the stage are unknown at this time, however, all RPC-XXX-A instances that are known to have reached Stage 5 have disappeared. It is unknown how if this disappearance is itself accomplished via anomalous means or if instances instead are simply compelled by RPC-XXX to vanish for unknown purposes.
As of November 2023, 57 RPC-XXX-A instances have been identified. All of these instances reached Stage 5, and their whereabouts are currently unknown. No specific pattern has been identified to suggest why these individuals became affected by RPC-XXX. Efforts to identify other RPC-XXX instances are ongoing.
History: The Authority first became aware of RPC-XXX when Watchdog programs monitoring medical records and psychiatric reports flagged multiple records of psychiatric patients experiencing almost identical hallucinations and behavioral shifts; these reports came from seven countries in Europe, North America, and Australia. Watchdog programs determined that the likelihood of all of these individuals experiencing similar symptoms as a result of mundane causes, despite no apparent pattern or connection between them, was sufficiently small to warrant Authority interest. Until Incident XXX-1, these reports formed the main source of information on RPC-XXX.
Incident XXX-1 began two months after the start of the RPC-XXX research project, when Agent Allison Conrad was identified as an instance of RPC-XXX-A following psychiatric evaluation for unrelated reasons. Agent Conrad was undergoing the end of Stage 1 at the time, having been experiencing RPC-XXX dreams twice a week for twice a week and experiencing for first RPC-XXX waking hallucination for the first time three days later. Agent Conrad was immediately brought in for observation by the RPC-XXX research team, with the goal of both studying RPC-XXX firsthand and if possible, finding a way to cure Agent Conrad.

Containment Protocols: Authority webcrawler Sierra-12 is currently monitoring for any discussion of RPC-XXX online, and Authority agents embedded within the United States government are currently monitoring for mentions of RPC-XXX within government documents. In particular, any knowledge of RPC-XXX within the US government is to be suppressed to avoid the discovery of RPC-XXX by the United States Occult Community. Copies of the original RPC-XXX maps are available to all personnel reassigned to Site-17112.
Description: RPC-XXX is a small town located in Bulloch County, Georgia, referred to by its residents as Hiyaka. RPC-XXX is only accessible to persons attempting to locate it using a map displaying its location; persons attempting to find RPC-XXX without such a map will be unable to find it, in some cases even driving through the area it should be located in without seeing it, instead reporting an uninhabited area of forest. No actual evidence that RPC-XXX existed prior to July 1997 exists; no records have been identified in county, state, or federal archives. Furthermore, the town itself contains only surface-level evidence of long-term inhabitation; archived government documents and newspapers allegedly printed before July 1997 instead contain irrelevant information or words printed in random configurations, any graves located in the town graveyard that mark persons buried before July 1997 are empty, and former residents that current inhabitants claim had moved before July 1997 have not been located. Some buildings and landmarks within the town display signs of having been artificially aged and weathered in ways meant to make them appear as if they were constructed before July 1997. Inhabitants of RPC-XXX will, when presented with this information, display confusion, denial, and in some cases, outright aggression if pressed, though many also seem to consider this information irrelevant.
History: The earliest known reference to RPC-XXX comes from maps published by the Georgia Department of Transportation in July 1997. These maps placed RPC-XXX at ██°██.█′N ██°██.█′W, approximately seventeen miles northwest of the county seat of Statesboro at the intersection of U.S. Highways 25 and 80. It was determined that GDOT employee Jonathan Glover was responsible for RPC-XXX’s inclusion. Glover was an alumnus of Appalachian State University in North Carolina, and claimed it was intended as an in-joke; specifically, as a reference to Appalachian State University’s athletic rivalry with Statesboro-based Georgia Southern University13. Glover was unable to provide any further information on RPC-XXX or its origins.
RPC-XXX was discovered in April 2002, when resident Jeremy Parker attempted to enlist in the United States Army while in Atlanta; no records of his residence in RPC-XXX could be found, and Authority webcrawlers eventually flagged discussion of his circumstances within Army record-keeping as evidence of possible extra-dimensional interference.

Description: RPC-XXX-1 is the manuscript of an unfinished novel, entitled The Owl in Daylight, written sometime between 1977 and 1982. RPC-XXX-1 is generally described by readers as dealing with themes related to metaphysical exploration of identity, reality, and perception. The text consists mostly of disjointed and fragmented chapters, notes, and drafts, much of which appears nonsensical or recursive but which does contain a consistent narrative. However, the exact content of RPC-XXX-1 has differed between readers.
RPC-XXX-2 is believed to be the mummified corpse of American writer Philip K. Dick, the author of RPC-XXX-1. Despite the fact that Dick was cremated following his death in 1982, RPC-XXX-2 was discovered in Dick's former residence in 1988; DNA testing has confirmed that RPC-XXX-2 is genetically identical to Dick.
