Registered Phenomena Code: RPC-XXX
Object Class: Alpha-White
| Hazard Types:Additional Properties: |
Containment Protocols: Objects are contained in two groups at Site-096. The first group is comprised of RPC-XXX-1 through -5. Only one item may be handled at a time, and personnel must ensure afterwards that it is properly closed. Staff who are deaf or hard of hearing are to be given higher priority when assigning researchers and guards to this group. All proposals involving opening RPC-XXX-1 through -5 simultaneously will be summarily rejected. If transport of the items is necessary, they are to remain separate until containment has been established at the destination.
The second group is RPC-XXX-6 and -7. Neither should be opened in a way that orients the interior towards yourself or others. CSD cells have been reserved to house the current instances of RPC-XXX-6A and -7A.
Description: The collective designation for 7 marble containers measuring 9 cm on all sides.
Records pertaining to the acquisition of RPC-XXX-1 through -5 have been lost but it is known to be among the items inherited from the Auctoritas Impertus. Each bears an identical engraving on its underside believed to be some unknown language. When the lids of the items are removed, they produce a constant sound between 90-110 decibels. These sounds have the ability to implant thoughts within the minds of listeners. The sound produced and thoughts induced differ between instances, but all support the idea of opening as many of RPC-XXX as possible and leaving them open indefinitely.
As more instances are opened, these induced thoughts strengthen into a compulsion. It is theorized that opening all RPC-XXX items simultaneously will allow their control to be absolute or trigger some secondary anomalous effect. The Authority has elected not to test this.
Addendum XXX-01: Sounds and Effects of Individual RPC-XXX Items
Further insight into RPC-XXX would not come until August of 2022, when RPC-XXX-6 and -7 were unearthed at an archaeological dig near █████████, Cyprus. Two major differences set these new items apart from from the other five. The first is the engraving on their underside, which is written in Ottoman Turkish. Translated into English, it reads as follows:
Those who shout to be heard in a world of whispers will be silenced.
The second is the anomaly seen when the items are opened. When RPC-XXX-6 or -7 is opened, and the interior is oriented towards an organic being that is capable of speech, it will begin communicating using the voice of its target. The item in this state displays extremely limited awareness. It is capable of perceiving speech directed at it, but is unaware of other sounds and possesses no other senses1
The secondary effect of the items is applied to their target, henceforth RPC-XXX-XA. RPC-XXX-XA is rendered incapable of conveying information. All forms of communication are still possible; the subject may speak, write, draw, or perform gestures. However, these messages will go ignored by any audience and will be swiftly forgotten. This applies even when communications are transcribed or copied by a third party, and when the audience is presented with messages without knowing their source.
Although RPC-XXX-6 will speak using the voice of the affected subject, and possesses the subject's memories, it is a wholly separate entity. RPC-XXX-6 is affected by the communications block placed upon the source of its voice.
The first instance of RPC-XXX-XA known to the Authority was P███ S██████, who had inadvertently activated RPC-XXX-6 after unearthing it. Although he could not himself warn others of what had happened, RPC-XXX-6 was able to do so in his stead. P███ S██████ and RPC-XXX-6 were taken into custody by MST Echo-21 ("Sleeping Sirens") without issue, as was RPC-XXX-7 when it was found two days later.
On 5/3/2023, P███ S██████ was found dead in his cell, having used utensils to cut his own throat. It is likely that P███ S██████ expressed an intent to commit suicide prior to the act, but personnel were unable to register or act upon this information. Subsequent examination of RPC-XXX-6 revealed that it had gone silent. Researchers speculated that the death of P███ S██████ had removed his voice from RPC-XXX-6, and that it could be used on another target. Their hypothesis would be proven correct as the object successfully replicated the voice of CSD-7884 and induced the expected secondary effects. The death of RPC-XXX-XA remains the only known method of reversing or resetting the effects of RPC-XXX-6 and -7.
Many researchers believe that all RPC-XXX items are manifestations of the same anomaly, and that their different effects are attributable to the targets they were used on. If this is the case, locating potential RPC-XXX-1A through -5A instances may be the next step in understanding RPC-XXX as a whole.
