Overview

Born into poverty in the shadow of the Great Smoky Mountains, "Twelve String" learned from an early age that his mind was his greatest asset. He often spent his time wandering the forests and foothills of Appalachia, learning about the world from other residents or on a few occasions, from local cryptids. As he entered high school he also discovered he had a good head for numbers, and was able to earn a partial scholarship to the University of North Carolina to pursue a degree there, working his way through school by playing his guitar in local bars. He also developed an interest in the then-burgeoning field of anthropology, and attended as many of the classes offered there as he could. After graduating, he was offered a minor position at the Charlotte Center of the University of North Carolina, and spent the next few years teaching there. However, the outbreak of the Korean War caused him to enlist. He was motivated by a lingering survivor's guilt, as several of his childhood friends had fought in the Second World War while he studied at college, and not all had come home. He quickly put the skills he had learned hunting for his family in the backwoods to use as a sharpshooter.

He first came to the attention of the Authority during Operation Firefly, a joint mission with the UNAAC to assassinate North Korean thaumaturgic asset "Gosu"2. Gosu's termination was considered particularly important, as she was known to be making use of anomalous assets left behind by the PLA Special Directorate following the cessation of Chinese anomalous activities in the Korean peninsula. Twelve String, at that point a Private First Class, was one of several American soldiers clandestinely recruited by members of MST Easy-27 ("Anabasis")3. None of these soldiers were aware of the Authority's presence in the mission, but all had previous encounters with the anomalous, or like Twelve String, came from esoteric backgrounds4. The mission would have ended in disaster had it not been for Twelve String.

Gosu and her allies had been forewarned of the operation, and were able to ambush the team as they made there way north. After sustaining casualties, the leader ordered a tactical retreat, but Gosu continued to harass them as they escaped, using anomalous abilities to confuse the team and cause them to become lost. Twelve String was eventually separated from the others, and for unclear reasons, Gosu began targeting him personally while sending her underlings to continue picking off his comrades. For three days Twelve String and Gosu pursued each other deeper into the Korean wilderness, with Twelve String using Appalachian folk magic he had learned in his childhood to counter her own abilities. At the end of their fight, Twelve String was able to momentarily disrupt her thaumaturgy, and quickly took advantage of this to fatally shoot her. At this moment, the glamor that Gosu had placed around her associates was banished, and the surviving members of MST Easy-27 were able to successfully drive them off and make their way back to UN lines. Twelve String arrived two days after they returned, and was commended after presenting proof of his role in Gosu's elimination. After the end of his term of service, he was quickly approached with an offer from the Authority.

Though initially offered a position with the Protection Division due to his wartime experiences, Twelve String preferred the more staid Research Division, citing physically debilitating injuries and his own academic career as evidence that his talents would be of more use in a less active role. After his recruitment, he immediately began to make a name of himself with his

Twelve String chose to step down in 1992, returning to a regular Research Division position before retiring in 2003. He would suffer a debilitating stroke in early 2007, which led to the loss of most motor functions; those close to him reported that being unable to play his beloved guitar severely harmed his psyche, and he would pass away before the end of the year. He was buried in his home state of Appalachia in a small service attended by several long-time colleagues, including the then-current GD-SCHL and GD-NORTH.
